Book Week 2025 Highlights: A Celebration of Reading and Creativity at GMIS Semarang
- 02.08.2025 01:41
From Monday, 28 July to Friday, 1 August 2025, GMIS Semarang celebrated its annual Book Week with great enthusiasm and creativity. Across the week, pupils engaged in a variety of themed activities that fostered a love of reading, storytelling, and cross-age collaboration. The school community came together to make Book Week a memorable and enriching experience for all.
📖 Book Fair – Periplus & Gramedia Booths
Monday- Wednesday , 28 - 30 July | Lobby Area | Open until 2:30 PM
The week began with the arrival of Periplus and Gramedia book booths in the school lobby. Pupils and parents had the opportunity to browse and purchase a range of titles, with prices starting from IDR 25,000. The booths remained open until 2:30 PM, allowing families—particularly those with younger pupils—to select books together.
Book Character Dress-Up & Opening Assembly
Monday Morning, 28 July | Blue Field Area
Book Week officially launched with a colourful Opening Assembly and Character Parade. Pupils from every year group dressed up as their favourite literary characters and introduced themselves on stage.
The assembly concluded with a cheerful catwalk and group photo sessions, creating wonderful memories and encouraging pupils to showcase creativity and confidence.
Buddy Reading & Literacy Activities
Following the assembly, pupils participated in Buddy Reading sessions, where older pupils read stories to younger ones in small, mixed-grade groups. These sessions promoted leadership and empathy and were supported by carefully selected books curated by English teachers.
Form teachers also facilitated themed literacy activities throughout the day, allowing pupils to explore characters, story structure, and creativity.
Character Hunt – Early Years & Primary
During morning recess, Early Years and Grades 1 to 5 took part in a lively Character Hunt. Organised by the English Department, this activity involved searching for hidden character cut-outs placed throughout the playground and classrooms. Pupils who found characters handed them to their form teachers to earn House Points, adding a fun and interactive element to the day.
Classroom Literacy Projects
Throughout the day, pupils worked on engaging literacy-based activities, including:-
Writing book summaries using printed templates
-
Watching and analysing book-to-film or art adaptations
-
Beginning story drafts for the Digital Book Competition
Form and subject teachers led these activities collaboratively, ensuring that every classroom became a space for storytelling and reflection.
Digital Book Competition
Throughout the Week | During English & ICT Lessons Only
As part of the week-long programme, pupils collaborated with their English and ICT teachers to create original digital stories. They drafted their narratives by hand, scanned the work, and converted it into digital flipbooks using Heyzine.
Each entry was reviewed, and one winner per section was selected. The results were announced during the following Monday's assembly.
